On July 9, 2021, Equity Bank CEO Dr James Mwangi handed over PPEs to Sister Beatrice Osire at St Joseph Ombo Mission Hospital in Migori County. The hospital, along with St Camillus Hospital and Migori County Referral Hospital, will benefit from the donation for the next 18 months.
Equity Bank has dedicated Sh1.7 billion to the fight against Covid-19, with Sh1.1 billion specifically allocated to protect nurses and doctors from the disease. The bank has also donated Sh89 million to support the welfare of medics.
According to Lands Executive Elijah Odhiambo, the disease has stretched the hospitals' capacity in the county to the limit, with a positivity rate of 4.2 per cent and 69 individuals lost to Covid-19. The county has recorded around 1,500 Covid-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic.
Dr Mwangi emphasized the importance of protecting health workers and called on Kenyans to take care of the environment, stating that it would be better for people to heal in a healthy surrounding.
Bishop Michael Odiwa noted that PPEs are currently the answer to Covid-19, and urged residents to maintain their guards and follow protocols to fight the spread of the disease.
