July 10, 2021 - In a bid to boost food security in Laikipia County, NewFortis Sacco, a Nyeri-based financial cooperative, has launched a new initiative targeting farmers and pastoralists in the semi-arid region.
The Sacco, which has over 3,500 members in Laikipia, aims to provide credit facilities to farmers and pastoralists to enhance their returns.
According to NewFortis Chairman John Githinji, the Sacco is partnering with agricultural officers and other key players in the agricultural sector to support farmers and pastoralists in accessing credit facilities.
“NewFortis Sacco is ready to work with farmers and pastoralists to assist them rise again especially after the devastation on the economy brought about by Covid-19 pandemic,” Githinji said.
The Sacco has also introduced mobile money banking and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in all its branches to reduce the risk of Covid-19 and enhance cashless transactions.
Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi has welcomed the initiative, assuring the Sacco of the County Government’s support and urging them to work closely with the County Department of Trade and Co-operatives to achieve its objectives.
