On July 9, 2021, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed issued a stern warning to sports federations and associations against the mistreatment of women in sports.
Speaking on the matter, Mohamed cited basketball, stating that investigations into the sport would be completed soon.
"I am delighted that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic teams have a good number of women. Kenya has surpassed the IOC guidelines and affirmative considerations by presenting an equal number of men to women athletes," Mohamed said.
She emphasized that Kenya has entered more women Olympians compared to other countries, and that as a nation, they must take cognizance of the barriers that exist in various facets of society hindering women and girls from reaching their full potential.
As part of her measures to curb women mistreatment, Mohamed issued a directive that no women's teams will leave the country for any competition or participate in internal competitions without being accompanied by at least two women officials, a doctor, and a team welfare officer.
She also appointed a nine-member gender welfare committee, which includes four-time Boston Marathon winner Catherine Ndereba as chairperson.
