On July 5, 2021, at around 9 pm, Peter Kariuki returned home to his wife Esther Wanjiku Githae in the Kagira area of Dagoreti sub-county in Nairobi County. However, his late arrival would have severe consequences.

According to a police report, upon opening the door, Esther immediately splashed hot water on her husband's face and chest, causing him severe pain. The victim was forced to move to his neighbor's house, where he spent the night.

The next morning, Peter Kariuki reported the incident at the Matini Police Post and was treated at the Riruta Health Centre. He was later discharged.

On July 7, 2021, members of the public contacted the OCS Kabete, suspecting that Esther would flee the area. The OCS then sent police officers, who arrested the accused from her house.

Esther appeared before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Monica Maroro and pleaded not guilty. She was released on a cash bail of Ksh 10,000 with an alternative bond of Ksh 20,000.

Magistrate Monica Maroro ruled, 'I have considered the fact that the accused has denied the offence, and the prosecution has not objected to the release of the suspect on bail. I, therefore, grant her a cash bail of Ksh 10,000 with an alternative bond of Ksh 20,000.'
