Published on July 9, 2021, a man who claimed to offer university students jobs has been charged with stealing their laptops.
Stephen Ochieng allegedly targeted three students at the United States International University, promising them online survey jobs in exchange for their laptops.
He stole a laptop worth Sh46,500 from Eugene Kiplangat, and two laptops worth Sh31,500 each from Collings Odhiambo and Hudson Mungai.
According to the police, Ochieng had visited the university seeking IT students with personal laptops for the online survey jobs. The victims showed up, boarded his vehicle, and were asked to alight and push the car when it developed mechanical problems.
However, Ochieng sped off with their laptops, leaving one of them to record the car's registration details. The students reported the incident at Langata police station.
Ochieng is also accused of stealing a mobile phone worth Sh17,500 from a Langata resident who he had visited claiming to be conducting an online survey.
He denied the charges before senior resident magistrate Sharon Maroro of Kibera law courts.
Police had requested to detain him at Hardy Police station, but he was remanded at Industrial Area Remand and Allocation Prison. He was admitted to a Sh200,000 bond and an alternative cash bail of a similar amount.
