Published on July 9, 2021, the Lionesses are set to face off against Egypt, South Sudan, Burundi, and hosts Rwanda in the bid for a ticket to the Fiba Afro-Basket championships.

Coach George Mayienga expressed confidence in his team's preparation, stating, "The team has trained well and we are going to do more to fine tune our technique in the remaining time."

Mayienga acknowledged the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has led to strict health protocols during training and the championships.

"It has been tough for everyone involved to execute the training programme while ensuring that they remain safe from the virus," Mayienga said.

The team will undergo mandatory Covid-19 tests upon arrival in Kigali and will be housed in a "bubble" at Sainte Famille Hotel to minimize the risk of infection.

International players, including Dubai-based Rose Ouma and US-based Victoria Atieno, Brenda Wasuda, and Felmas Koranga, have been brought in to inject experience and exposure into the team.

"We brought in the international players in a bid to scale up the confidence," Mayienga added.

Team captain Rose Ouma expressed confidence in the team's preparations, saying, "The preparations have been good and we acknowledge the support of the government and all the stakeholders. We are up to the task and we will give it our best."
