On July 9, 2021, a shooting incident occurred at Kiminini market in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, leaving Phanice Chemutai Juma with injuries.

According to Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng', the shooter, Ken Muyundo, a businessman and licensed firearm holder, mistook Chemutai for Caroline Kangogo, a police officer linked to the murders of constable John Ongweno in Nakuru and businessman Peter Ndwiga Njiru in Juja.
