On July 9, 2021, the University of Nairobi announced a major overhaul of its administrative structure.

The institution has abolished five Deputy Vice-Chancellor positions, leaving only two harmonized positions, which have been renamed to Associate Vice-Chancellor.

Additionally, all 25 colleges have been abolished, and their functions have been placed under faculties, which have also undergone significant changes.

The number of faculties has been reduced from 35 to 11, and the institution of higher learning says this change will help avoid duplication and functional overreach.

College principal and deputy principal positions have been removed, and will be replaced by four executive and associate dean posts.

According to Prof. Julia Ojiambo, the UoN Council chairperson, the reorganized office holders will 'align resources to the faculties where teaching and learning take place.'

Notably, all 14 research institutes, including the Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative (KAVI), Wangari Mathai institute (WMI), and Institute of Development Studies (IDS), have been spared in the radical change.

The university said the changes were proposed and adopted after a year-long structural audit.
