On July 8, 2021, a woman was shot in the abdomen by a licensed firearm holder in Trans-Nzoia County, in a case of mistaken identity.

The woman, Phanice Chemutai Juma, was shot by businessman Ken Muyundo at Kiminini Market, after he reportedly mistook her for wanted police officer Caroline Kangogo.

According to a police report, Chemutai had allegedly pestered Muyundo with multiple calls to meet, which made him suspect she was Kangogo.

Muyundo reported the incident at 9:30 pm at the Kiminini Police Station, claiming that he fired a bullet to scare Chemutai, whom he suspected was the wanted suspect.

However, it was later revealed that Chemutai had actually met Muyundo after exchanging numbers, and had identified herself as Phanice Chemutai Juma from Kaboiywo village in Kaptama location.

Chemutai was later apprehended and on interrogation, confessed to having met Muyundo.

She was rushed to Kitale county hospital for treatment after realizing she had been shot in the left abdomen.

The police repossessed the gun belonging to Muyundo, which was loaded with ten rounds of 9 by 18mm, and also retrieved the cartridge which will be used as an exhibit in the case.
