On July 8, 2021, Jacob Zuma, South Africa's former president, started serving a 15-month sentence for contempt at Estcourt prison in KwaZulu-Natal province.
According to Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, Zuma will be eligible for parole after serving a quarter of his sentence, which would be approximately four months.
Speaking in front of the prison, Lamola stated that Zuma would be afforded dignity throughout his term of incarceration and would not receive any special treatment.
As per Covid-19 protocols, Zuma will be placed in isolation for the first 14 days in jail.
It is worth noting that Zuma was handed down the sentence by the Constitutional Court on June 29, 2021, after he refused to appear before anti-graft investigators.
