On July 9, 2021, a dramatic rescue operation took place in Kamuiru village, Kirinyaga Central, where a newborn baby was pulled to safety from an 80-feet deep pit latrine.
The owner of the latrine, alerted by the baby's cries, called the police and the fire brigade, who quickly responded to the scene.
According to County Fire Brigade Boss John Kiama, the baby was rescued around 10am and taken to Kerugoya Hospital for observation.
"Many families are breaking up for lack of a baby boy when others are throwing them in toilets and rivers," Kiama said, highlighting the dangers faced by newborns in such situations.
