A newborn baby was rescued from an 80-feet deep pit latrine at Kamuiru village in Kirinyaga Central after the owner reported hearing a baby cry from the latrine.

The owner of the latrine, who wished to remain anonymous, called the police and the fire brigade to report the incident.

County fire brigade boss John Kiama confirmed that the child was rescued at around 10am and taken to Kerugoya Hospital for observation.

According to Kiama, the mother of the baby has yet to be identified.

"Many families are breaking up for lack of a baby boy when others are throwing them in toilets and rivers," Kiama said in a statement.
