On Thursday, Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) signed a historic partnership with CMA-CGM Shipping Line, a leading French shipping company, to improve the training of seafaring cadets in Kenya.
The agreement, signed between the Kenyan and French governments, will see BMA students trained aboard vessels belonging to CMA-CGM Shipping Line, providing them with valuable real sea time exposure.
As part of the deal, an exchange program will also be established between BMA and CMA-CGM Shipping Line to train tutors and enhance the quality of training at the college.
BMA has 400 students pursuing various courses, and the partnership is expected to benefit them greatly.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Nancy Karigithu, emphasized the importance of the agreement in enhancing the quality of training at the college.
"The government is aware of the immense opportunities in the shipping and maritime sector. We are also keen to see the growth of the blue economy even as we develop the vast maritime space," Dr. Karigithu said.
She added that the blue economy has been recognized as the eighth sector expected to contribute 10% of the country's GDP under the economic pillars of Kenya's development blueprint, the Kenya Vision 2030.
The event was attended by French Ambassador to Kenya, Ms. Aline Kuster-Menagarer, and other dignitaries, including National Treasury Chief Administrative Officer, Nelson Gaichuhie, and Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga.
Managing Director of CMA-CGM Shipping Line, Jean Baptist Longin, expressed his confidence in the partnership, stating that the absorption of Kenyan crew will bring quality and experience to their fleets.
