Kenya is grappling with a rising number of child neglect cases, with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection citing 93% of reported child violence cases this year as neglect.
Responding to this crisis, the government has announced plans to train young parents, particularly those who became parents by accident.
Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui stated, "We have realised that there are several people that became parents by accident we are therefore going to conduct a training for these kind of parents. We want to enhance positive teachings for them," during the closing ceremony of the Interfaith Conference on Ending Violence Against Children.
Estimates suggest that there are currently 47,000 street families in Kenya, with most resulting from parental neglect.
The government has launched a campaign to inculcate parenting programmes for young families, bringing together religious leaders, NCCK, KCCB, UNICEF, SUPKEM, and World Vision.
