On July 8, 2021, Terry Atieno, a former journalist and radio presenter, announced her candidacy for a seat in the Hamburg town/county assembly in Germany.
Atieno, popularly known as Proud Chocolate, has been a prominent voice for the African diaspora in Germany, using her online broadcast identity to share stories of resilience and success.
"I'm going to face it all. Hate and support, but I am ready for it all," she wrote on Instagram, highlighting her determination to represent the interests of integrated immigrants.
With 17 years of living abroad, Atieno is well aware of the challenges faced by the diaspora community, including inequality in treatment and a lack of recognition.
"I want equality in treatment and for people to see beyond colour. I want us to be taken seriously. I want our children to grow up here feeling 100 per cent at home," she said.
Atieno's journey to Germany began after she discovered a Deutsche Welle business card during her internship at KBC between 2001 and 2005. She eventually moved to Germany and established herself as a successful radio presenter, addressing issues that people are often too shy to discuss.
