With temperatures plummeting to near-freezing levels, many Kenyans are struggling to keep their homes warm and cozy.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, some areas such as Nairobi and Nyeri have reported temperatures as low as 11 degrees Celsius.

While some may opt for heaters, interior designer Lina Odero suggests alternative solutions that are not only cost-effective but also aesthetically pleasing.

One of her recommendations is to use warm rugs, particularly those made of wool, which retain heat better than other materials.

She also suggests investing in curtains with thick fabrics, which can help retain heat during the day and keep the house warm at night.

Another tip is to use warm colors to decorate the home, such as yellow, orange, or red, which can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

When it comes to furniture, Odero advises against leather sofas, which lose heat quickly, and instead recommends using throw blankets and cushions made of wool to retain heat.

Additionally, she suggests arranging furniture in a way that allows for even distribution of heat, and moving furniture away from heat sources such as fireplaces to allow the heat to spread more evenly.
