Published on July 8, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta's visit to Paris did not yield the desired result, with Kenya failing to secure a €128 million (Sh. 16.3 billion) loan from France for the JKIA railway project.

The loan was meant to fund the construction of a five-kilometre metre-gauge line linking the airport to the standard-gauge rail (SGR) terminus in Syokimau.

According to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport James Macharia, the visit did not result in the signing of the deal, putting the infrastructure plan on hold.

Kenya and France had agreed on a series of projects, including the development of the Nairobi Central Business District-Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) commuter railway line and the 400KV Menengai-Rongai electricity transmission line, last year.
