International Boxing Day, a celebration of the sport, has a rich history dating back to 2017 when it originated in Russia under the initiative of Umar Kremlev, then Secretary General of the Russian Boxing Federation.
Fast forward to 2019, AIBA recognized and designated International Boxing Day to be celebrated annually, encouraging the global boxing community to join in.
On July 22, AIBA announced a change of date for International Boxing Day, moving it to August 27. This new date coincides with the first edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships, held in Havana, Cuba in 1974.
Between August 17 and August 30, 1974, 11 champions were crowned, with the host country topping the medal table.
‘International Boxing Day will be celebrated for the third time worldwide and this year it is a newly established holiday. Not only is the new date dedicated to a very special event in AIBA’s history, but it also is more convenient for everyone to celebrate after the summer holidays.
AIBA President Mr. Umar Kremlev said, ‘This year we expect more countries to join and more people to be involved. I truly believe this day is a great promotion for our sport worldwide.'
AIBA will share further details on plans for International Boxing Day in the coming weeks, explaining how the global boxing family can be a part of this major milestone in the annual boxing calendar.
