July 7, 2021 - Coffee prices in Nyeri County have improved, prompting a group of farmers from Mathira constituency to switch to organic farming.

At Kanyama village, farmers are ditching conventional fertilizers in favor of organic alternatives, including manure, to boost production and quality.

According to Jane Wanjiku, a local farmer, the change has already shown positive results, with her coffee bushes increasing production.

Job Kareithi, a manufacturer of organic fertilizer called Biodeposit, says many farmers are turning to his product due to its benefits.

"We encourage farmers to use organic farm inputs because many consumers abroad follow what farmers use to grow their produce at the farm level," Kareithi said.

The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has launched a campaign to increase coffee production, including the introduction of a new coffee act and the establishment of a coffee exchange.
