Published on July 8, 2021, a Senate committee meeting was held to discuss the payment of Sh18 billion to 12,000 former councillors.
The former councillors, who are struggling with poverty, are waiting on the decision of a taskforce formed to inquire into their plight.
Finance CS Ukur Yatani failed to attend the meeting, citing that his ministry was validating a report by the taskforce committee.
Yatani wrote to the committee, stating, "The National Treasury in conjunction with the ministries of Labour and Devolution and ASALS is currently validating the taskforce report in readiness for the committee meeting."
Senate committee Chairman Johnson Sakaja rejected the requested time and ordered the three Cabinet Secretaries to appear next week.
Former councillors narrated their struggles, with Geoffrey Gitau stating, "We are very poor. We don’t have anything to eat. Most of us are very old and some have even passed on without getting this money."
