Published on July 8, 2021, the assassination of Haiti's President Jovenel Moïse has sparked a mix of reactions from the Haitian diaspora.
Some, like Anthonine Pierre, a community organizer in Brooklyn, see the event as a moment for his generation to grapple with the country's instability. 'This is our generation's moment,' he said.
However, others, like Garry Pierre-Pierre, publisher of The Haitian Times in New York, are shocked by the assassination, calling it 'a step too far, even for Haiti.'
Leonie Hermantin, a Haitian community leader in Miami, noted that Moïse enjoyed support in his home region of northwest Haiti and among some in South Florida, particularly from the working class.
While some view Moïse as a corrupt leader, others see him as a reformer who was trying to change the power dynamics in Haiti, particularly in regards to money and electricity contracts.
