On the eve of the 2021 general elections, a significant shift in the Moi family's political dynamics has come to light. Two brothers of former President Daniel Moi, Philip Moi and Raymond Moi, have defected to the camp of Deputy President William Ruto.
According to reports by Citizen Weekly, published on July 7, 2021, the move is seen as a strategic maneuver by Philip Moi to ensure the preservation of the late President Moi's interests in the region, should Ruto assume the presidency.
Philip Moi's decision is also reportedly driven by a desire to punish his younger brother, Senator Gideon Moi, for allegedly isolating him from their father and using his influence to acquire properties for himself.
Lee Njiru, the former press secretary to President Moi, has also switched allegiance to Ruto's camp, reportedly due to the influence of several prominent Kalenjin leaders who have pledged to support Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.
Other notable figures from the Rift Valley region who have thrown their weight behind Ruto include Franklin Bet, Henry Kosgey, Joshua Kulei, Benjamin Sogomo, pastor Silas Yego, and Isaac Ruto.
Insiders have accused Senator Gideon Moi of being 'stingy and mean,' citing instances where he failed to provide financial assistance to individuals in need, including pastor Silas Yego, who was facing auctioneers over debts.
