On July 7, 2021, Resident Magistrate Zainab Abdul ruled that Dickson Njanja Mararo, a suspect in the Quiver Lounge shooting, would remain in custody for seven days to allow police to complete investigations.
The police had sought to detain Mararo for 14 days, but his lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, opposed the application, arguing that there were no compelling reasons to detain his client.
Mararo is alleged to have shot two police officers, Police Constables Lawrence Muturi and Festus Musyoka, and a waitress, Felistas Nzisa, at Quiver Lounge along Thika Road.
Mararo had presented himself to the police and recorded a statement on July 5, 2021, at the DCI headquarters, which his lawyer claimed was sufficient to complete investigations.
According to Ombeta, 'The suspect does not work with the police, so they do not require him to prepare ballistic and forensic reports, and that cannot be a compelling reason to detain him.'
