July 8, 2021 - Safaricom has announced that its phone credit scheme, Lipa Mdogo Mdogo, has attracted 250,000 customers since its launch in July last year.
The scheme, which allows customers to purchase smartphones on credit with daily repayments as low as Sh20, has been a huge success for the telco, with over 60% of customers upgrading from 2G and 3G to 4G devices.
This represents a growth of 39.8% year-on-year in 4G devices and has contributed to the 31.1% growth in data customers using more than 1GB.
According to Safaricom, the growth in data customers has helped to boost the telco's mobile data revenue, which grew 11.5% to Sh44.79 billion in the financial year ended March.
Handset revenue also rose 28.4% to Sh8.51 billion in the review period.
Safaricom aims to continue growing its data business by moving more customers to higher Internet speeds and relying on data analytics to create personalised credit scoring for its customers.
