Whitney Kayoji, an eight-year-old girl from Kenya, has been living with disabilities since she was young. Despite her condition, she is determined to continue her education.
However, her journey has been complicated by the absence of special needs assistance at her school, Kapyemit Primary School in Maili Nne, Eldoret. The school lacks a special needs toilet, making it difficult for Whitney to stay in school.
According to her class teacher, Mrs. Ayieko Mary, Whitney's condition has been exacerbated by the rainy season, which makes it even more challenging for her to move around. Mrs. Ayieko expressed her concern for Whitney's well-being and the difficulties she faces in her daily life.
Whitney's mother, Mrs. Mary Wangare, is the sole breadwinner for her family of three. She relies on casual labor, which sometimes leaves her without a steady income. Despite her struggles, Mrs. Wangare is determined to provide the best possible life for her daughter.
Whitney's story highlights the need for greater support and resources for children with disabilities in Kenya. The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has a crucial role to play in sensitizing the society on their role and how they can be accessed.
Whitney's future is uncertain, but with the help of well-wishers and organizations supporting people living with disabilities, she may be able to undergo corrective surgery and improve her condition.
