Published on July 7, 2021, Nairobi City County Government and the County Assembly have reached an agreement to resume stalled ECDE centers constructions.

The move aims to address the overwhelming number of children joining county ECDE centers. In 2017, the county awarded Desiral company a tender to construct new ECDE centers at a cost of Ksh. 218 Million, but the project stalled due to payment issues and insecurity at the construction sites.

Contractor Winfred Mutua cited payment issues and insecurity as major challenges, stating that the company had raised a certificate of Ksh. 14 Million which was never paid. Mutua also mentioned that some of their workers were injured by youths and goons who claimed that the area MCAs were unaware of the situation.

However, Mutua assured that the company is ready to resume work and complete the project within six months. Education committee chairperson Sylvia Museiya has pledged to ensure that the contractor is paid and her contract extended to allow her to complete the project.
