On July 7, 2021, a tense standoff between police and Sabasaba protesters erupted in the streets of Nairobi, with officers resorting to teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.
The protesters, led by former MP Agoustino Neto and the Kenya Tutakayo Students caucus, were demanding swift action against police brutality, respect for the Constitution of Kenya, and a more favorable working environment.
Neto, a key figure in the protest, emphasized the importance of continued resistance, saying, "We shall keep the spirit going and we must take part to liberate this country and all Kenyans must be respected and live in peace pursuing liberty and happiness."
Maxwell Magawi, a representative of the University caucus, criticized the government's decision to increase taxes on food items, warning that students would suffer as a result. "Since Covid-19 started we are getting a huge percentage of learning materials including some lessons so where do you want students to get the additional cash for airtime and all that I mean this is an acceptable and requires immediate redress," he said.
