On July 7, 2021, Abdalla Mohamed, the first candidate set to be interviewed for the post of Commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), withdrew from the interviews.

The withdrawal came after Kenya Methodist University denied awarding him a bachelor's degree, a qualification he had held since 2007.

Elizabeth Muli, chair of the selection panel, confirmed the withdrawal in an email to Mohamed, stating that he would not attend the interview.

The panel had written to the university seeking authenticity of his degree qualification, but the university confirmed that it did not award him the degree certificate.

Abdalla Mohamed was among 36 candidates lined up for interviews by the selection panel, which was recruiting four commissioners who resigned after the 2017 General Election.

Other candidates shortlisted for interviews include former judges and magistrates vetting board vice-chairperson Roseline Doreen Adhiambo Odhiambo Odede (Siaya) and former KNCHR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori (Meru).
