Published on July 7, 2021, Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) is set to transform the Machakos Country Bus terminus into an underground parking bay.
The planned multi-storey parking area at the Machakos Country Bus will be digitally operated, with motorists charged hourly, according to NMS Director-General Mohamed Badi.
Major General Badi stated, “We are in the process of developing underground parking at Sunken Park and eventually Machakos Bus Park will be turned into an underground parking area.”
The NMS aims to increase parking capacity by converting other parking areas into underground parking bays, similar to the multi-storeyed parking bay built by the Holy Family Basilica, which has 536 parking slots.
Motorists will be able to pay for parking through mobile money and leave their cars to be parked in a designated floor, as stated by Badi.
According to a report in the Business Daily, motorists in Nairobi's city centre pay an average of Sh. 12,000 per month for parking, while those in other areas pay significantly less, ranging from Sh. 4,000 to Sh. 10,862.
