Published on July 7, 2021, a declaration aimed at addressing the housing crisis in Africa was signed by Kenya and other member countries. The Yaoundé Declaration highlights the challenges of affordable housing and the need for a collaborative effort among stakeholders to resolve the shortage.

According to Shelter Afrique's Centre of Excellence, the overall shortage of housing in Africa is estimated at 56 million housing units, with over 90% in the affordable housing bracket. Mr. Chimphondah, a key figure in the declaration, emphasized the importance of effective policy and legislation in addressing the challenges of quality control, land tenure, and financing.

The declaration addresses key issues such as leadership and governance, policies and legislation, coordination, land systems, finance and taxation, capacity building, and adoption of new building technologies. To ensure the implementation of the resolutions, a six-member team was appointed, led by Shelter Afrique's Head of Legal Services, Ms. Houda Boudlali, and UN Habitat's Regional Advisor, Dr. Claude Albert Meutchehe Ngomsi.

The team will be assisted by Shelter Afrique's Head of Policy, Research and Partnership, Dr. Muhammad Gambo, and Regional Business Manager, Edmond Adjikpe, as rapporteurs, and Shelter Afrique's Ag. Company Secretary, Natasha Koli, and Head of Communication & External Affairs, Babatunde Oyateru, as members.
