On July 7, 2021, the Government of Kenya announced its intention to seek an additional $31.1 million from the Global Fund to support its COVID-19 vaccination efforts.

The funding will be used to purchase vaccines through the African Union facility and COVAX, the global scheme for sharing COVID-19 jabs.

Kenya has already received KSh7.44 billion in grants from the Global Fund under its COVID-19 Response Mechanism (C19RM) programme, which has been used to purchase automated and manual test kits, personal protective equipment (PPEs), and oxygen equipment, as well as support for containment activities at the community level.

The World Bank has warned that Kenya must execute its plan to vaccinate the entire adult population against COVID-19 by mid-2022 to avoid weakening its economic recovery.

According to the World Bank's Kenya Economic Update Report, a sluggish deployment of vaccines due to supply and logistical hurdles could have negative consequences for Kenya's economy.

Keith Hansen, World Bank Country Director, stated that Kenya's economic outlook remains bleak due to the pandemic.
