Published on July 7, 2021, President Samia Suluhu's ascension to the presidency was met with a mix of emotions. While some were optimistic about her leadership, others were skeptical, given her background as a member of the ruling party.
As a Tanzanian patriot, I initially called on all citizens to support her efforts to rid the country of the negative influences that had taken hold during the previous administration. I saluted her arrival, acknowledging the need for a change in leadership.
However, I have since had second thoughts, particularly after hearing her statements on the economy and political reforms. Her assertion that the president does not make mistakes is concerning, as it suggests a lack of accountability and humility.
Furthermore, her claim that it is not the time for political and constitutional reforms, citing her focus on fixing the economy, is misguided. In reality, addressing the economy requires fixing the underlying political and social issues that have contributed to the country's problems.
As President Samia navigates her role, I urge her to seek wisdom and resist the temptation to become a female version of her predecessor, President John Pombe Magufuli. By doing so, she can avoid perpetuating the same mistakes and work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
