Published on July 7, 2021, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is set to upgrade the Malindi Airport in Kilifi County, a move aimed at enabling the airport to accommodate larger planes and handle direct international flights.
The upgrade, which is expected to cost KSh1 billion, will see the runway length increase from the current 1.4 kilometers to 2.4 kilometers. This expansion is in line with the growing number of passengers using the airport, with data from KAA showing a nearly double increase in passengers between 2014 and 2019, from 79,000 to 181,000 in 2019.
Malindi, located in Kilifi County, has significant tourist attractions and has been a popular destination for European, mainly Italian tourists. The initial phase of the airport's expansion covered the expansion of the airport's apron, construction of a car park, and a 7.5-kilometer security fence.
