Safaricom's Record Sh. 127.5 Million Bonus for Michael Joseph

Published on July 7, 2021, Safaricom's former CEO Michael Joseph received a record Sh. 127.5 million bonus in the financial year ended March 2021.

At the time, Joseph had already relinquished his acting CEO role at Safaricom, having taken over following the death of former CEO Bob Collymore in 2019.

Joseph's bonus pay was part of his total pay for the year, which also included an additional Sh. 6.3 million for his role as chairman and non-executive director, making his total pay Sh. 133.8 million.

Joseph's pay was significantly higher than his previous year's pay, which was Sh. 126.3 million in the financial year ended March 2020.

According to Safaricom's current pay structure, the chairman is paid Sh. 5.7 million per annum, while non-executive directors receive Sh. 2.2 million each per annum.
