On July 7, 2021, Kenya announced its intention to seek Sh3.3 billion from the Global Fund to bolster its Covid-19 response efforts. The move comes as the country aims to vaccinate its entire adult population by the end of next year.

According to Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman, the country submitted an additional funding request of Sh3.36 billion on June 15, which is currently under review. The funding will be used to purchase vaccines through the African Union facility and the COVAX global scheme for sharing jabs.

The Global Fund has already approved Sh7.44 billion in grants to support Kenya in mitigating the effects of the pandemic under its Covid-19 Response Mechanism (C19RM) programme. Previous grants have been used to purchase automated and manual test kits, personal protective equipment (PPEs), and oxygen equipment, as well as support containment activities at the community level.

The C19RM programme supports countries in mitigating the impact of Covid-19 on HIV/Aids, tuberculosis, and malaria programmes. Countries currently receiving funding from the Global Fund are eligible to apply for the new funding.
