July 7, 2021, marked a decade since Felix Mbugua founded Legibra, an IT solution-providing firm with bases in Kenya and Rwanda. As the CEO, Mbugua has done business with major firms, including embassies and multinationals, yet his satisfaction lies in serving one client to the best of his ability.
Legibra was born out of the need for consistency in the IT industry, particularly in the freelance IT sub-sector where reliability and professionalism are often lacking. Mbugua explains, 'When negotiating with freelancers, they sound very good and will prove they can do it, but do they actually do as advertised? Almost never.' He aimed to solve this issue by creating a structured and disciplined approach to IT services.
With a starting capital of minimal funds, Mbugua began building websites for clients while still a student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He emphasizes that all a business needs is skills and a computer, and that clients can be found through networking and referrals.
Legibra's future plans include expanding to all 54 African countries within the next five years, with a current presence in Kenya and Rwanda. The firm has partnered with Google to offer g-suite services and is open to collaborating with other businesses.
Mbugua stresses the importance of simplicity in business, stating that complicated processes can deter potential customers. He explains that Legibra's services are straightforward, with clear pricing and easy payment options via M-Pesa.
As a business, Legibra has had to cut costs, including rent, HR expenses, and day-to-day running costs. Mbugua notes that collaboration with other businesses is also crucial for survival during economic downturns.
For Mbugua, the highest moment for Legibra is when they secure a new client, regardless of their size or status. He emphasizes that the firm does not prioritize working with larger clients over smaller ones, as long as they can provide quality service.
Mbugua's typical day consists of responding to clients' needs, handling customer experience, and dealing with suppliers and service providers. He prioritizes serving his clients to the best of his ability, ensuring that they receive quality service and are satisfied with the outcome.
