Kenya has reported a surge in Covid-19 cases, with 400 new infections recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 186,453.
According to the Ministry of Health, the new cases were identified from 5,068 samples tested, taking the cumulative number of samples tested to 1,989,066. The country's positivity rate stands at 7.9 per cent.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the new cases in a statement issued on July 6, 2021, stating that 386 of the new cases are Kenyans, while 14 are foreigners.
The youngest person to contract the virus is a 12-day-old infant, while the oldest is 97 years old. The breakdown of the new cases shows that 220 are males and 180 are females.
Of the new cases, 354 patients have recovered from the disease, with 259 recovering from the Home-Based and Isolation Care program and 95 from various health facilities. The total number of recoveries now stands at 129,165.
Sadly, seven more patients have succumbed to the disease, taking the death toll to 3,697. There are currently 1,133 patients admitted in various health facilities, while 5,387 patients are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.
Some 113 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with 30 on ventilatory support, 46 on supplemental oxygen, and 37 patients under observation. Another 185 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen, with 163 in general wards and 22 in High Dependency Units (HDU).
The cases are spread across various counties, with Nairobi reporting 155 cases, Kilifi 43, Uasin Gishu 34, and Siaya 21.
