On July 6, 2021, Meru County Government took a significant step towards empowering people with disabilities (PWDs) by releasing Sh10 million to the Meru People With Disability (PWD) Sacco.

The funds will be lent out to members across the county at low interest rates, in line with the devolved government's promise to empower PWDs.

Speaking during the cheque presentation, Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu emphasized that PWDs require empowerment, not sympathy, to become economically independent.

He stated that the government will continually increase the fund to ensure a steady flow of income for PWDs' ventures, contributing to the vision of 'Making Meru Great.'

As part of the empowerment initiative, the County Government will dispatch officers from Meru Microfinance to train Sacco members on financial literacy and profitable business practices.

Deputy Governor Ntuchiu also urged the PWD Board to embark on a vigorous recruitment drive to incorporate the over 60,000 PWDs in Meru County into the Sacco.

County Minister for Education and Social Development Liner Nkirote Kailanya advised Sacco members to utilize the funds prudently, ensuring its growth and transformation of PWDs' lives.
