On July 6, 2021, the Kenyan appellate court issued a ruling that temporarily blocked the swearing-in of Ann Kananu as the Governor of Nairobi.

The court's decision was made by Judges Wanjiru Karanja, Justice Jessie Lessit, and Justice Jamila Mohammed, who reserved their reasons for the ruling and stated that they would deliver them on October 22, 2021.

The appeal was filed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who was impeached in 2020, through his lawyers Afred Nyamu and Harisson Kinyanjui.

Sonko's lawyers argued that the High Court had failed to consider an existing court order that was in place at the time of his impeachment, which they claimed should have prevented the Nairobi County Assembly from taking action against him.
