On Monday, a devastating road crash occurred on a highway in southern Zimbabwe, claiming the lives of 20 people.
The incident happened between the cities of Masvingo and Bulawayo, where a Toyota Granvia burst a front tyre and veered onto the oncoming lane, colliding with a Toyota Wish.
According to Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the police spokesperson, the accident occurred when the Toyota Granvia, travelling from Masvingo towards Zvishavane, burst a tyre and veered onto the oncoming lane.
“The ZRP confirms that 20 people have died in the accident,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
Three injured victims were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital, while the bodies were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
The incident highlights the dangers of Zimbabwe's poorly maintained road network and the risks associated with using unroadworthy vehicles.
As the country struggles to maintain its road network due to an economic crisis, the risk of accidents like this one remains high.
