Safaricom Appoints New Managing Director for Ethiopian Operations

Kenyan telecom giant Safaricom has appointed Anwar Soussa as the Managing Director of its Operating Company in Ethiopia, effective July 1, 2021. This appointment is part of the company's efforts to expand its operations in the region.

With over two decades of experience in the telecommunications industry, Anwar has held various senior leadership positions at prominent telcos, including Vodacom, Airtel, MTN, and Digicel. He has also served as the Managing Director of Vodacom DRC and the Chairperson of Vodacash (M-PESA) since 2017.

During his tenure at Vodacom DRC, Anwar achieved significant milestones, including driving the company to cross the $500M USD in service revenue mark for the first time in 2020. He will leverage his expertise to lead the Ethiopian Operating Company and execute the consortium's goal to bring about transformational economic and social impact in Ethiopia.

As the Managing Director of the Ethiopian Operating Company, Anwar will be responsible for setting up strategies and plans that lead to the provision of quality and affordable mobile and internet connectivity, enabling millions more Ethiopians to access quality telecom services.

Before joining Vodacom, Anwar served as the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel in Uganda and Chad. He holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the American College of Greece (Deree) and a master's degree in Marketing from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
