AIBA Expands Weight Categories for Boxers

On August 1st, 2021, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) implemented a fundamental change to the sport by amending the weight classes for youth and elite athletes at all AIBA competitions.

Men's weight categories have increased from 10 to 13, while women's weight categories have risen from 10 to 12.

The decision was made after a widespread consultation of stakeholders in men's and women's boxing, as presented by AIBA Secretary General Mr. István Kovács during his report to the Board.

According to Mr. Kovács, 'We believe this step will allow a greater pool of boxers to participate in the respective weight categories where they feel most strong and comfortable.'

AIBA President Mr. Umar Kremlev added, 'We are implementing this crucial change now whilst widespread reform of AIBA's whole competition structure is in process.'

The changes aim to ensure easier weight management and equal fighting, with the minimum weight for men reduced from 49kg to 48kg.

The new weight classes for men are as follows:

  • Minimumweight – 46-48kg
  • Flyweight – 51kg
  • Bantamweight – 54kg
  • Featherweight – 57kg
  • Lightweight – 60kg
  • Light Welterweight – 63.5kg
  • Welterweight – 67kg
  • Light Middleweight – 71kg
  • Middleweight – 75kg
  • Light Heavyweight – 80kg
  • Cruiserweight – 86kg
  • Heavyweight – 92kg
  • Super Heavyweight – +92kg

The new weight classes for women are as follows:

  • Minimumweight – 45-48kg
  • Light Flyweight – 50kg
  • Flyweight – 52kg
  • Bantamweight – 54kg
  • Featherweight – 57kg
  • Lightweight – 60kg
  • Light Welterweight – 63kg
  • Welterweight – 66kg
  • Light Middleweight – 70kg
  • Middleweight – 75kg
  • Light Heavyweight – 81kg
  • Heavyweight – +81kg
