On Monday, July 5, 2021, a speeding vehicle knocked down a mother and her infant, who was tied to her back, along the Sori – Rodi Kopany road in Ndhiwa town, Homa Bay county.
Unfortunately, the mother, Sharon Otieno, sustained head injuries and died on the spot, while the infant was rushed to Ndhiwa Sub-county hospital and survived with minor injuries.
According to Ndhiwa Sub County Police commander Robert Aboki, the truck driver had already been arrested and was detained at Ndhiwa Police Station to avoid mob justice.
Aboki confirmed that the driver had reported the matter and that police have since launched an investigation into the incident.
Speaking during the funeral of Meline Waithera Njoroge, who died in a separate accident in Nairobi CBD, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to book.
"It is moments like this that we are reminded that some of us engage in conduct and behavior that gets us here. Now we are burying a very promising young girl," Matiang'i said.
