July 5, 2021, marked a somber day in Uganda as Aggrey Siroyi Awori, a renowned Ugandan statesman and younger brother of former Vice President Moody Awori, passed away at the age of 82.
According to sources, Aggrey had been battling health issues for the past month, including blood pressure and other diseases. His wife, Thelma, confirmed his passing to a close associate, Peter Oguttu.
"He has been sick for about a month and I have been in touch with him until today when his wife, Thelma told me that he has died," Oguttu stated.
Aggrey's impressive career spanned politics and sports. He was a renowned Olympian who broke records during his time at Harvard University by becoming the first person to win three events: the long jump, high hurdles, and 60-yard dash.
Aggrey also ventured into politics, contesting for the Presidency in the 2001 Ugandan general elections and emerging third. Before retiring from active politics, he was appointed as ICT minister by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in 2009, a position he held for two years.
Aggrey hails from one of the most prominent families in Kenya, which has produced accomplished individuals in various fields. His sister, Grace Wakhungu, serves as a director for Erad Supplies and General Contract Limited, while his sibling, Mary Okello, is Kenya's first woman bank manager and founder of Makini schools.
Other notable relatives include Hannington Awori, a famed corporate executive and pioneer civil engineer; Nelson Awori, a renowned surgeon who performed the first Kidney transplant at Nairobi Hospital in 1978; and Dennis Awori, a former Kenyan ambassador to Japan and chairman for Toyota Kenya.
