Anwar Soussa to Lead Safaricom's Ethiopian Venture

Published on July 5, 2021, Anwar Soussa has been chosen to lead the Global Partnership for Ethiopia, a consortium of Safaricom Plc, Vodacom Group, Vodafone Group, Sumitomo Corporation, and CDC Group.

As the Managing Director of Vodacom DRC and Chairperson of Vodacash, Anwar has a proven track record of success, having grown Vodacom DRC into the largest Vodacom subsidiary outside of South Africa, surpassing $500 million in service revenue in 2020.

With extensive experience in the telecommunications industry, Anwar has held senior roles at Airtel Uganda and Chad, MTN, and Digicel. He holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the American College of Greece and a master's degree in Marketing from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.

As the leader of the Ethiopian Telco, Anwar will report to the Board of the Ethiopia entity and Safaricom PLC CEO, Peter Ndegwa. The consortium, led by Safaricom, aims to deliver quality and affordable mobile and internet connectivity to millions of Ethiopians.

The Ethiopian government projects that the Safaricom-led consortium will create 1.5 million new jobs and attract $8.5 billion in investments over the next 10 years.
