On July 5, 2021, the Energy and Regulatory Petroleum Authority (EPRA) took a significant step towards enhancing consumer safety in Kenya by exposing nine facilities engaging in illegal Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) activities.

According to EPRA, the listing follows random surveillance and enforcement exercises conducted between April and June 2021. The regulator emphasized the importance of compliance with the Energy Act 2019 and the licensing conditions stipulated in the Act.

EPRA cited Section 11 (e) of the Energy Act 2019, which mandates the development and enforcement of guidelines to ensure compliance with the Act and licensing conditions. The Authority also referenced the Petroleum Act 2019 and the Petroleum (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) Regulations 2019, which require persons to undertake the business of LPG in accordance with the terms and conditions of their valid licenses.

The nine non-compliant facilities are City Gas Limited, Green Energy Limited, More Gas Limited, Eco-Energy Limited, Topline Traders Limited, Salama Gas Limited, Valley Gas Limited, Moto Gas Limited, and Kofurow Gas Limited.

EPRA has urged the public to report suspected cases of illegal LPG trade through the hotline number 0709 336 000, which is operational during official working hours.
