On July 3, 2021, a shocking incident occurred at Baita Restaurant in Upper Hill, Nairobi, where Ann Wanjiru Waiganjo, the Officer in Charge of DCI Karen, collapsed and died while attending a party for senior police officer SSP Henry Kiambata.
Ann's life was shrouded in controversy, including a high-profile bigamy scandal in 2019. She was accused of being married to two different men, David Murimi, a police inspector, and David Mbitu Muchi, a junior prisons officer, at the same time.
According to reports, Ann and Muchi exchanged vows in a ceremony attended by top Kenyan police officers, while she was still married to Murimi. When questioned about the incident, Ann claimed that Murimi was physically abusive and she had reported the matter to Kikuyu Police Station.
Ann's decision not to press charges against Murimi was reportedly due to her concern about bringing the police service under negative scrutiny. However, she did pursue a divorce from her first husband, which allegedly opened her up to career-targeted threats.
Ann's death was reported by SCCIO Lang'ata, Abdirashid Yakub, who filed a report stating that Ann collapsed at around 5:39 pm while attending the party. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
