On July 4, 2021, K24 Digital reported on the untimely death of Ann Wanjiru Waiganjo, a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, who collapsed at a party in Upper Hill and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
However, Wanjiru's life was marred by controversy, including a high-profile bigamy scandal in 2019. At the time, it emerged that she had married two men simultaneously, sparking widespread outrage.
According to reports, Wanjiru had first married David Murimi, a police inspector, before parting ways with him and marrying David Mbitu Muchi, a junior officer in the prisons service. The two men had exchanged vows in church, with top Kenyan cops in attendance, while Wanjiru was still married to Murimi, whom she had wed at the Attorney General's office.
Wanjiru's defense was that she had long since parted ways with Murimi, citing physical and verbal abuse. She had alleged that she was physically abused and even reported the matter at Kikuyu Police Station, but later decided to forgive him due to their shared profession.
A court document revealed that Wanjiru filed for divorce, with a ruling made on July 3, 2020, stating that the relationship had broken down and could not be revived. Despite experiencing career-targeted threats, Wanjiru continued to serve at the Karen Police Station.
