On July 4, 2021, a C130 Hercules military plane crashed in Jolo island, Sulu province, Philippines, with 92 people on board.
According to reports, the aircraft overshot the runway while trying to land, resulting in a heavy cloud of smoke and flames from the wreckage.
Armed forces chief Cirlito Sobejana stated that the plane 'missed the runway, trying to regain power but it didn’t make it.'
More than 40 survivors were rescued and rushed for urgent medical attention.
Reports indicate that seventeen bodies have been recovered from the crash site at Patikul.
The plane was carrying troops believed to be from Cagayan de Oro, on the southern island of Mindanao, and was part of a step-up presence in the southern Philippines to combat Islamist militants such as the Abu Sayyaf group.
State news agency posted images of the crash site revealing wreckage on fire in a wooded area close to a number of buildings.
