Published on July 4, 2021, a notice from the condo association acknowledged recent shoddy flooring work but failed to mention cracked concrete and corroded rebar outlined in an engineer's report.
Mariel Tollinchi, a lawyer for the condo association board, disputed the need for evacuation, stating that any building without a 40-year certification is considered 'unsafe,' regardless of its actual safety.
The board claimed the engineer's report had been sent to the city before the evacuation order, and another engineer had been hired to provide more details on the reported cracks, which could be fixed with stucco.
The board is working on getting estimates for the repairs, with structural repair estimates at $250,000 and electrical work priced 'in the millions.'
Residents were told they could stay at a shelter on the county fairgrounds, but some expressed concerns about relocating and the financial burden of security deposits and advance rent on another apartment.
